Job Opportunity at the World Bank in Ethiopia

The World Bank Country Office in Ethiopia seeks to fill up to three (3) positions for short-term consultants to bolster its engagement in the energy sector within Ethiopia. These roles will be stationed in Addis Ababa and are open to Ethiopian nationals.

The ongoing energy initiatives and prospective projects facilitated by the World Bank in Ethiopia encompass various areas such as power sector reforms, investment endeavors focusing on power transmission, distribution, and grid electrification, implementation of solar mini grids & standalone solar systems for households and communities, promotion of clean cooking solutions and improved cook stoves, and integration with neighboring countries to enhance regional electricity networks. Additionally, the World Bank provides technical assistance and capacity building to sector institutions. The selected consultants will operate as integral members of the Ethiopia energy team, contributing to the design and execution of existing and forthcoming World Bank energy initiatives in Ethiopia and potentially neighboring countries.

Position 1: Economic Transformation Consultant

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in economics (PhD preferred), international development, or a related field
  • Over five years of relevant professional experience in applied research, gender analysis, impact evaluations, and policy dialogue
  • Demonstrated experience in fieldwork in Ethiopia or Sub-Saharan Africa, including executing impact evaluations or similar research, survey design, and implementation
  • Proficiency in analytical and quantitative skills, particularly in econometrics, and adeptness with STATA
  • Exceptional project management abilities
  • Behavioral competencies facilitating effective communication with government entities, country partners, and teams, including active listening, capacity development, and adaptability to local institutional contexts
  • Commitment to teamwork, knowledge-sharing, and influencing across organizational boundaries
  • Fluency in English and Amharic, with additional Ethiopian languages preferred
  • Willingness and ability to travel
  • Familiarity with World Bank operations and procedures preferred

Position 2: Operations Officer

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Economics, Law, Finance, Business, or a closely related field
  • At least seven years of relevant professional experience with a focus on implementing private sector and financial sector/investment climate reforms in Ethiopia
  • Proven track record in delivering advisory engagements, particularly in private sector development and financial sector issues
  • Comprehensive understanding of Ethiopia’s business environment for the private sector, opportunities for private sector investments, and key stakeholders in this domain
  • Established network with relevant Ethiopian stakeholders in government and the private sector advantageous
  • Familiarity with IFC and WBG products/instruments and potential for cross-organizational collaboration
  • Ability to analyze different policy and regulatory frameworks governing thematic areas
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and ability to learn new systems; familiarity with project management systems a plus
  • Excellent written, verbal communication, and presentation skills in English
