The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) was established by the General Assembly in December 1991 to enhance global responses to complex emergencies and natural disasters. OCHA operates within the Operations and Advocacy Division (OAD) of the UN Secretariat, coordinating humanitarian efforts to ensure a coherent response to crises. It provides a framework for various actors to contribute effectively to overall humanitarian efforts.

OCHA’s mission includes mobilizing and coordinating principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies, advocating for the rights of people in need, promoting preparedness and prevention, and facilitating sustainable solutions.

Position 1: Finance Officer

  • Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
  • Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in business administration, finance, or related field. A first-level degree combined with an additional two years of qualifying experience may substitute for the advanced degree.
  • Experience:
    • At least five years of progressively responsible experience in finance, administration, budget, or business administration.
    • Experience in humanitarian financing (grant management, audit processes, humanitarian funding monitoring) is required.
    • Field experience in emergency situations is desirable.
    • Experience within the UN system or a similar international organization and in the Southern and/or Eastern African region is desirable.
  • Additional Requirements:
    • Significant on-the-ground experience in challenging crises, including humanitarian aid projects.
    • Experience with UN or NGOs is critical.
    • Ability to work effectively with government representatives and technical staff in an inter-agency context.
    • Willingness to travel within the country.
    • Cultural awareness and diplomatic skills are essential.

Position 2: Humanitarian Affairs Officer

  • Location: Bahir Dar, Ethiopia
  • Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in political science, social science, international studies, public administration, economics, engineering, earth sciences, or related field. A first-level degree combined with an additional two years of qualifying experience may substitute for the advanced degree.
  • Experience:
    • At least seven years of progressively responsible experience in humanitarian affairs, emergency preparedness, crisis/emergency relief management, rehabilitation, development, or related areas.
    • Minimum of three years of field experience in emergency situations (complex emergency or natural disaster) is required.
    • Experience managing field teams in humanitarian operations is required.
    • Experience within the UN system or a similar international organization and in North-East Africa is desirable.
