About Us: MERSA Media Institute is a nonprofit think tank focused on media coverage. We aim to foster vibrant, accountable, and independent media, professional unions, and training centers in Africa through research, capacity building, and institutional support.

Location: Based in Washington, DC, we work primarily in sub-Saharan Africa, with a particular focus on Ethiopia. We believe that free and independent media are essential to the development of peaceful, prosperous, and democratic societies.

Training Program: In partnership with Deutsche Welle Akademie, MERSA Media Institute is organizing a second round of new-entrant training under the Media and Journalism Education project. This three-month journalism crash course will provide hands-on journalism training delivered by industry experts to participants from various academic backgrounds.

Position: Assistant Trainer

Role Overview: The assistant trainer will support the main trainers during in-class sessions and mentorship, assist in editing trainees’ stories, accompany trainees during field reporting sessions, and prepare and manage studio and editing schedules.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, media, communication, or related fields.
  • 0-2 years of work experience in a media house.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft and Google products.
  • Strong written, editing, and oral communication skills in English and Amharic.
  • Ability to work under pressure.

  • Previous experience as a trainer or teacher.
  • Skills in recording, shooting, and editing.
  • Avid learner who thrives under pressure.
  • Creative storyteller and visual thinker.
  • Strong conflict management skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and organize training materials.
  • Attend all training sessions and support the mentorship of trainees.
  • Ensure timely delivery of trainees’ assignments and assist in editing.
  • Accompany trainees during field reporting sessions.
  • Prepare and manage studio and editing schedules.
  • Support project procurement processes including TOR preparation, receipt of quotations, and bid evaluation.
  • Produce digital content including graphic design and audiovisual material for web and social media.
  • Assist in event planning and management.
  • Schedule meetings, set agendas, and write meeting minutes.
  • Organize and facilitate stakeholder meetings.
  • Write, edit, and distribute content such as publications, press releases, website content, annual reports, and speeches.
  • Maintain a database of resources, contacts, and project files.
  • Perform any other related tasks as assigned.
