Operating in Sub-Saharan Africa since 1998, Internews has offices and projects across the region, with a regional office in Nairobi. Our focus is enhancing media capacity for fact-based and objective reporting on electoral and democratic processes and reforms.

Position 1: Journalism Trainer

Qualifications:

  • MA in Journalism, Communications, or International Relations.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience managing media/journalism capacity-building initiatives in Ethiopia.
  • Proven experience in training and mentoring journalists or journalism students, and developing training curricula.
  • Background in journalism and newsroom management.
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret media trends and needs.
  • Experience in creating and managing training budgets.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Ethiopia Media Lead and other Internews staff to plan and implement relevant activities.
  • Work with project staff to develop and manage media engagement and training plans, coordinate travel, provide guidance at training locations, and conduct on-site and distance mentoring for partner journalists.
  • Lead the media capacity-building program to enhance reporting on democracy, governance, and elections in Ethiopia. This includes researching and preparing training materials, developing curricula, and implementing training workshops, mentorships, and story awards focused on independent media, community radios, and online media.
  • Design and implement capacity-building initiatives for local journalists in Ethiopia on information gathering techniques, conflict-sensitive reporting, inclusivity, scriptwriting, and technical aspects of mixing program content.
  • Oversee and track mentorship and production stipend recipients’ content production across various media.
  • Organize editorial and other election and media-related roundtables with local partners, and guide the recording of these sessions for airing on various media and online platforms.
  • Collaborate with the Media Lead to follow up, guide, and document the work of partner media organizations and other local partners.
  • Produce story outputs and success stories for training and mentorship activities, in close collaboration with the Media Lead and the M&E team.
  • Ensure timely reporting of activities to the Media Lead and effective collaboration with relevant Internews staff.
  • Build and maintain relationships with the Ethiopian Media Authority (EMA) and other media development organizations in the country. Represent Internews in relevant coordination forums and interactions with key partners, and maintain an updated database of relevant contacts.
  • Explore new ways to engage with local media partners and communities.

Position 2: Program Assistant

Qualifications:

  • BA in Business Administration, Management, Accounting, Economics, or a related field.
  • 2-3 years of experience in administration, finance management, and program support.
  • Experience in event planning and logistics for project implementation.
  • Experience in travel arrangements.
  • Proficiency in activity budgeting, expense reporting, and contract administration.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other MS tools.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Administration and Logistical Support:

  • Coordinate travel logistics, including hotel bookings, taxis, visas, and accommodations for Internews activities in the country.
  • Provide logistical and administrative support for regional meetings and trainings in Addis Ababa and other locations in Ethiopia.
  • Request quotes, prepare documentation for budget authority approval, and place orders.
  • Prepare expense reports.
  • Ensure compliance with Internews procurement policy in consultation with the Regional Office. Prepare Procurement Request forms to obtain Purchase Order (PO) approvals.
  • Facilitate vendor payments via cash, cheque, or wire transfers.
  • Coordinate periodic meetings with the project team, local partners, and other staff members.
  • Provide correspondence and administrative support for the project team and in-country (Ethiopia) staff as needed.
  • Assist the project team with submitting payment requests.
  • Work with HR departments on Business World staff entries and management.
  • Collaborate with HQ HR Department to draft Personal Service Contracts (PSCs) and liaise with Regional HR for related matters.
  • Review PSC invoices and activity reports before submission.

Program Support:

  • Support the Media Lead with programmatic needs in the country, especially during trainings and meetings.
  • Record meeting minutes.
  • Prepare signing sheets and payment documents for activities.
  • Support Monitoring and Evaluation efforts in the country, including administering pre- and post-tests during trainings and ensuring proper data collection and documentation.
  • Process and analyze data collected from training participants to measure achievements against performance indicators.
  • Support project reporting, progress reporting, mid-term review, and final evaluation.
  • Identify areas where technical support for project partners is required in collaboration with the Subgrants Officer.
