Position: Humanitarian Adviser

Essential qualifications, skills, and experience:

  • Proficiency in and experience working within one or more sectors covered by the Ethiopia Crises to Resilience Programme: emergency health, nutrition, WASH, protection, education, and humanitarian cash.
  • Demonstrated track record of providing humanitarian analysis and counsel to government entities, international or national humanitarian organizations, and/or donors.
  • Relevant experience in humanitarian programs within Ethiopia and a solid grasp of Ethiopian humanitarian policies and frameworks.
  • Experience in policy advocacy.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork abilities, with the capacity to adapt to evolving challenges.
  • Proven capability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Desirable qualifications, skills, and experience:

  • While the FCDO assessment prioritizes competency over years of experience, historically successful candidates have typically possessed 5-10 years of pertinent humanitarian experience to substantiate the requisite competencies.
  • Familiarity with working in fragile and conflict-affected settings, particularly on protection concerns.
  • Master’s level education in a related field or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Proficiency in Amharic and other local languages spoken in Ethiopia.

Roles and responsibilities: In this capacity, you will be tasked with:

  • Providing technical guidance to shape FCDO humanitarian policies and initiatives.
  • Taking the lead on various components of the Embassy’s flagship ‘Ethiopia Crisis to Resilience’ program, encompassing emergency health, nutrition, WASH, protection, education, and humanitarian cash. You will ensure effective program delivery through UN and NGO partners while offering clear direction and maintaining excellence in program management.
  • Keeping the embassy informed on the humanitarian sectors under your purview and contributing to the development of humanitarian policy.
  • Acting as the UK representative in coordination forums (including relevant clusters) and engaging with the Government of Ethiopia (specific ministries and the Ethiopia Disaster Risk Management Committee) and key international partners. You should cultivate a robust network within the Ethiopian humanitarian community.
  • Providing comprehensive analysis and advice to RHT (Regional Humanitarian Team) and the broader embassy within your designated sectors, as required.
  • Ensuring that protection risks and the needs of the most vulnerable civilians (including women, children, persons with disabilities, and internally displaced persons) are factored into all FCDO humanitarian programs and policies.
  • Conducting regular field visits (at least 20 days annually) to monitor FCDO programs and contribute to situational assessments and policy formulation.
