Job Vacancy at Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR)

Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) is a civil society organization based in Ethiopia, re-registered on September 19, 2019, under Proclamation No. 1113/2019 by the FDRE Civil Societies Organizations Agency. LHR aims to enhance the role of lawyers in human rights through training and capacity building, support legal professionals nationwide, facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences, and strategically litigate to promote and protect human rights as per the FDRE Constitution and relevant laws. The organization also works to raise awareness among justice bodies about international human rights instruments ratified by Ethiopia.

Position 1: Assistant Lawyer

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in law (LLB) with no prior experience required.
  • Knowledge of the Ethiopian legal system, criminal justice system, Ethiopian criminal and procedural laws, constitutional rights to legal aid, and national and international legal frameworks concerning the rights of arrested individuals.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the principal lawyer in providing legal aid services.
  • Offer legal counsel under the principal lawyer’s supervision.
  • Assist in preparing legal documents and briefs.
  • Perform documentation and clerical tasks as directed.
  • Uphold ethical standards as prescribed by relevant laws.

Position 2: Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) Officer

Job Requirements:

  • University degree in law, social sciences, or a related field, with specialized training in monitoring and evaluation.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in international development, including at least 3 years in monitoring and evaluation. Experience with human rights projects is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in English and Amharic, both written and spoken.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage the MEL Plan in coordination with the Executive Director, Program Director, and technical staff.
  • Establish and maintain an effective MEL monitoring and reporting system, including data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Design and implement data gathering systems to monitor performance indicators and measure outcomes.
  • Review and analyze statistical data related to project activities and objectives.
  • Contribute to annual work plans and decision-making processes.
  • Design MEL plans for LHR projects and conduct staff training on these methods.
  • Oversee research, surveys, and data collection as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with donor performance requirements.
  • Prepare bi-annual and annual MEL reports.

Position 3: Lawyer

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in law (LLB) with a minimum of 5 years of experience. Experience as a prosecutor is preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience in the Ethiopian criminal justice system, criminal and procedural laws, and the rights of individuals arrested by police.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal aid services to detainees in selected prison centers in line with LHR’s guidelines.
  • Prepare legal pleadings based on client needs and prepare cases for court.
  • Document and report legal aid activities to the project coordinator.
  • Supervise the assistant lawyer.
  • Ensure legal aid services adhere to professional ethical standards.
