The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a leading global humanitarian organization that delivers emergency relief, rehabilitation, and development assistance to vulnerable populations in over 30 countries.

Since 2000, IRC has been actively involved in Ethiopia, initially responding to a severe drought in the Somali region. We now support Ethiopians and refugees across six regions with various programs, including health, water and sanitation, economic recovery and development (ERD), women’s protection and empowerment, education, child protection, and multi-sectoral emergency response.

Position: Child Protection Assistant

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Social Studies

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Basic to intermediate knowledge of procedural and system-related job skills, gained through a mix of job training, some work experience, and formal education.
  • For Diploma holders: 2 years of relevant work experience; for Bachelor’s degree holders: no experience required.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey information clearly and concisely.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with a proven ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Capability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a dynamic, cross-functional team.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with stakeholders at various levels.
  • Proactive and positive approach to managing and adapting to change.

Job Description: The Child Protection Assistant will oversee a community-based child protection program in Deder Town. Responsibilities include leading prevention and response activities, community engagement, psychosocial support, and case management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess living conditions of children in IDP/Returnee centers and develop strategies to address their needs.
  • Support community leaders and government officials in monitoring, verifying, and documenting child protection cases.
  • Monitor the implementation of case action plans, conduct awareness-raising activities, and outreach programs.
  • Assist the Child Protection Officer in coordinating care arrangements and alternative care systems for children.
  • Promote child rights and community involvement through child rights clubs and awareness sessions.
  • Organize and facilitate psychosocial support activities at Safe Healing and Learning Spaces (SHLS).
  • Collaborate with the Child Protection Officer and team in organizing international events and awareness campaigns.
  • Participate in Best Interest Assessments with partners to address children’s needs.
  • Adhere to the Child Protection Code of Conduct.
  • Perform data entry into Child Protection Information Systems (CP IMS) and GBVIMS databases.
  • Undertake additional duties as assigned by supervisors.

Language Skills:

  • Proficiency in English is required. Fluency in Afan Oromo is advantageous.
