Position 1: Research Associate I – Internal/External

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) aims to enhance food and nutritional security and alleviate poverty in developing countries through research focused on the efficient, safe, and sustainable use of livestock. ILRI is the sole CGIAR research center exclusively dedicated to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage forage germplasm regeneration and multiplication at Debre Zeit/Bishoftu, ensuring plots are weed-free and properly labeled.
  • Harvest and process mature forage germplasm and seeds.
  • Record and analyze monthly field observations and forage characterization data.
  • Collaborate with the genebank database team on field data curation and retrieval.
  • Supervise field attendants and casual workers.
  • Monitor and manage pest and disease control in the field.
  • Collect herbarium specimens as necessary.
  • Assist in implementing research activities, including supporting training courses on quality forage/seed production.
  • Maintain inventory of reagents and equipment at the site.
  • Perform other duties as required by the supervisor.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • BSc degree with at least one year of work experience, or a college diploma with three years of relevant experience in plant sciences, horticulture, agriculture, or related fields.
  • Proven experience in farm management, agricultural field operations, or forage/crop seed production, with proficiency in using related tools and equipment.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic skills in statistical software.
  • Knowledge of handling agrochemicals (a spray certificate is advantageous).
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills in English.
  • Rigorous approach to monitoring task progress.
  • Experience with forage crops is advantageous.

Duty Station: Debre Zeit/Bishoftu, Ethiopia
Grade: HG 10
Minimum Base Salary: Birr 24,354 per month (negotiable based on candidate’s salary history)

Position 2: ILRI Internship – Engineering Facility and Projects Unit

Location: ILRI, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Duration: 3 months

Requirements:

  • Enrolled in an undergraduate program in architecture, construction management, or civil engineering.
  • Possess drawing skills and familiarity with design software (Adobe Photoshop, SketchUp, 3D Max, AutoCAD, ArchiCAD, or similar).
  • Good communication skills and maintenance inspection skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Good command of written and spoken English.
