The FAO’s Subregional Office for Eastern Africa (SFE) is tasked with the development, promotion, oversight, and implementation of agreed-upon strategies aimed at addressing subregional priorities in food, agriculture, and rural development. It fosters relationships with subregional institutions, including Regional Economic Integration Organizations (REIOs).

Position: Statistician

Situated in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Subregional Office collaborates with FAO’s Regional Office for Africa (Africa) to facilitate subregional policy dialogues on food security, agriculture, and rural development. It supports the formation of partnerships, capacity building, and resource mobilization for these sectors.

The incumbent, reporting to the Subregional Coordinator for Eastern Africa and under the technical guidance of the Regional Statistician, plays a pivotal role in enhancing the availability and quality of food, agricultural, and rural statistics in Eastern African countries. The position aims to boost the reporting rate of FAO data collections for global monitoring purposes.

Key responsibilities include collecting, processing, and analyzing social, economic, and environmental indicators, developing and maintaining statistical tools and databases, conducting research to support technical standards and international instruments, and providing technical assistance to FAO offices and field projects. Additionally, the role involves participating in multidisciplinary teams, facilitating capacity development workshops, contributing to resource mobilization activities, and advocating for international cooperation and knowledge sharing.

Specific functions include supporting SFE countries in implementing official methods for producing and disseminating Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicators, promoting initiatives like the Global Strategy for Agricultural and Rural Statistics and the World Programme for the Census of Agriculture, and facilitating the exchange of information and best practices among countries.

Candidates will be evaluated based on minimum requirements such as an advanced degree in statistics, mathematics, economics, or related fields, proficiency in English, and five years of relevant experience. Competencies include results focus, teamwork, communication, building effective relationships, and continuous improvement. Technical skills encompass statistical methods, survey methodology, data analysis software, and resource mobilization.
