The International Rescue Committee (IRC), one of the world’s largest humanitarian NGOs, provides aid to vulnerable individuals and communities across over 30 countries. Since initiating operations in Ethiopia in 2000 in response to severe drought in the Somali region, we have been actively assisting Ethiopians and refugees in six areas of the country. Our efforts encompass emergency and development programs in health, water and sanitation, economic recovery and development (ERD), women’s empowerment, education, child protection, and multi-sectoral emergency response.

Position: Child Protection Assistant

Job Overview:

The incumbent is responsible for executing a community-based child protection program at the Bambasi IDP site. They will support all aspects of prevention and response activities, including engagement with the community, psychosocial support initiatives, and leading the case management service in collaboration with the woreda bureau of women and children affairs (BOWCA).

Major Responsibilities:

Case Management

Provide coaching, mentoring, and technical assistance to the woreda BOWCA on child protection case management throughout all stages.

Assist the BOWCA team in assessing the living conditions of children at the IDP site and contribute to the development of appropriate strategies to address their needs.

Support team leaders and social workers of BOWCA in monitoring, verifying, and documenting cases of children.

Oversee the preparation and implementation of case action plans and home visits conducted by social workers.

Enter data into the Child Protection Information System (CPIMS) database and share compiled reports on a biweekly basis.

Support the BOWCA child protection officer in arranging appropriate care and alternative care systems with close attention to individual child concerns.

Collaborate with CP committees to identify potential foster families for unaccompanied and separated children.

Participate in BID Panels with other partners to conduct Best Interest Assessments ensuring children’s needs are addressed.

Assist the BOWCA office child protection team as required.

Other Additional Responsibilities

Organize and facilitate weekly constructive parenting sessions (Family Makes the Difference!).

Assist child rights clubs in raising community awareness about children’s protection concerns and promoting children’s participation in matters affecting their lives.

Organize and support psychosocial support activities at the Safe Healing and Learning Space (SHLS).

Work closely with the CP Officer to celebrate international events and conduct awareness-raising sessions.

Facilitate the involvement of children and the community (leaders and parents) in the child-friendly space and document progress.

Support budget preparation, work plans, and expenditure tracking to ensure proper fund utilization and timely activity implementation.

Adhere to and fully comply with the child protection code of conduct.

Undertake any additional responsibilities as requested by supervisors.

Key Working Relationships:

The incumbent will report directly to the Child Protection Officer with additional oversight from the Asossa area coordinator and technical support from CP managers based in Addis Ababa.

Job Requirements:

Demonstrate basic to intermediate level knowledge of procedural and systems to perform job requirements typically acquired through a combination of job-related training, on-the-job experience, and formal education.

Possess a University Degree in Social Science, Social Work, Psychology, or Sociology with 2 years of relevant work experience for diploma holders or no years of relevant work experience for first-degree holders.

NGO experience is advantageous.

Proficiency in both spoken and written English and Amharic languages.

Demonstrated expertise in facilitating capacity building and providing mentorship.

Excellent digital skills, especially in MS Word and Excel.

Effective interpersonal skills, adept at problem-solving, and adaptable.

Comprehensive grasp of CP program methodologies and execution.

Track record in crafting competency-focused training materials.

Encouragement for female candidates to apply is emphasized.

Background in supporting vulnerable children within an NGO environment.

Proficiency in the native language is advantageous.
