ZamZam Bank S C holds the distinction of being the inaugural bank authorized to operate as a comprehensive Interest-Free Bank within Ethiopia, undertaking a substantial responsibility to enhance financial inclusion in the country. In light of this, the bank is seeking qualified candidates to fill the following vacant position and invites applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and work experience outlined for the job openings.

Position: Shariah Compliance Officer

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure that the bank’s operations adhere to Shariah values, rules, ethical business practices, bank policies, and procedures within the legal framework and Shariah requirements.
  • Collaborate with the product development team diligently and conduct examinations on Shariah aspects according to AAOIFI standards and fatwas for each product before its presentation to the Shariah Advisory Committee (SAC) for resolution.
  • Formulate and propose appropriate Shariah risk management policies and guidelines.
  • Serve as a Secretary to the Shariah Advisory Committee, involving coordinating meetings, compiling proposal papers, disseminating Shariah decisions to relevant stakeholders, and engaging with concerned parties seeking further deliberations from the Shariah Committee.
  • Handle any additional assignments as directed by SAC.

Core Competency

  • Knowledge in Shariah, encompassing studies in Usul Fiqh (the origin of Islamic law) or Fiqh Muamalat (Islamic transaction/business law).
  • AAOIFI certification on Shariah governance, accounting, and/or audit principles is an advantage.
  • Relevant backgrounds, such as Islamic Banking & Finance and law, contributing to the depth and breadth of Shariah deliberations.
  • Analytical and research approach and a proactive attitude in managing issues.
  • Stay current with relevant regulatory requirements, guiding principles, and guidelines in Islamic Finance and Shariah Parameters.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, with a strong emphasis on report writing and presentation capabilities.
  • Previous experience with Islamic financing products or the financial services sector would be an added advantage.
  • Should demonstrate strong proficiency and knowledge in written and verbal Arabic, and English, along with proficiency in native languages.

Minimum qualification:

  • BA Degree in Economics, Management, Accounting, Law, Islamic Banking & Finance, or other related fields.
