Position: Public Information Assistant (Tour Guide)

Job Background

Under the delegated authority, the Public Information Assistant (Tour Guide) will carry out the following responsibilities:

  • Lead one-hour guided tours, four to five times daily, covering the history of Africa Hall and the United Nations’ work.
  • Participate in daily and specialized briefings on various topics such as peacekeeping, disarmament, and human rights. Stay informed on UN activities by studying UN resources in English.
  • Adapt language and content for diverse groups (e.g., children, students, senior citizens, VIPs, UN staff, media) and respond to sensitive questions with accuracy.
  • Provide excellent customer service to promote the history of Africa Hall and the UN’s mission in an educational and engaging way.
  • Handle challenging situations with emotional intelligence and strong client service skills.
  • Build positive working relationships with peers, tour coordinators, and supervisors based on trust and respect.
  • Assist in the smooth operation of the tours, including helping the Tour Coordinator with visitor dispatch, monitoring site closures, collaborating with cashiers and UN Security, and managing crowd control or visitor needs such as wheelchair assistance.

Functional Responsibilities

  • Conduct guided tours about Africa Hall and the United Nations’ work.
  • Participate in briefings on various topics and stay updated on UN activities.
  • Customize communication for different audiences and handle sensitive questions effectively.
  • Offer quality service to educate visitors about Africa Hall and the United Nations.
  • Manage stressful customer interactions with professionalism and empathy.
  • Foster positive relationships with colleagues and supervisors.
  • Assist with tour logistics, including monitoring sites, managing crowds, and supporting visitors needing assistance.

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, social sciences, international relations, or a related field is a plus.

Experience

  • At least five years of relevant experience in communications, public information, or a related field is required.
  • Experience as a tour guide in an international context is advantageous.

Languages

  • Fluency in English and French (written, spoken, and reading) is essential.
  • Knowledge of another UN official language (Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, or Russian) is desirable.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
